You know that big storm on the Great Plains? Directly, or indirectly, that's going to be our weather-maker for much of the week here in New York. Don't worry, we won't be seeing a foot or two of snow like they're expecting in Kansas, but today's sunny skies and the rain that's likely by mid-week are all the result of that storm. The trough of low pressure that's producing blizzard conditions from Texas to Kansas is pushing a ridge of high pressure up over the eastern portions of the US. That ridge means we'll see sunny skies and a high in the mid 40s this afternoon.
The storm looks like it will head up the Ohio Valley later in the week. Along the way the upper level trough that's making the storm churn near the ground will shoot out little upper level disturbances, one of which is expected to develop into a coastal storm. You people who wanted a mid-week storm are getting your wish! We'll have a cloudy, warm day tomorrow before the rain arrives in the early evening. A heavy, soaking, rain, maybe some snow will fall north and west of the city, is expected late Tuesday night.
As the lead storm moves away the main low should pass to the west of the city. The big storm will have most of its punch by then but we can still look forward to a prolonged period of showery weather and gusty winds on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday's high might reach 50 degrees, while Thursday and Friday will be in the mid 40s. Slightly cooler and drier weather is expected for the weekend as high pressure builds in behind the departing storm.
