It's been just over a week since 33-year-old Brit-born Brooklynite, Solange Raulston, was killed on her bicycle after a truck, going in the same direction, sideswiped her. Her ghost bike (pictured) is now up in her memory, as activists fight to change what is the most dangerous intersection in North Brooklyn — McGuinness Blvd. at Nassau Ave. in Greenpoint.
According to Transportation Alternatives there have been 34 crashes at the intersection involving both cyclists and pedestrians, from 1995 to 2005. Last week we covered what the organization, in conjunction with Neighbors Allied for Good Growth (NAG), had come up with as a solution to make the intersection safer. A spokesman for T.A. pointed out to the Daily News that the main problem is "traffic is in highway mode. It's an intersection that's not designed with pedestrian safety in mind."
As the city reconstructs Nassau Ave., the DOT told the paper, "Safety is our top priority and we will continue to look at ways to enhance this location." This may include giving pedestrians more time to cross the street. T.A. also notes that this isn't the biggest problem intersection in the borough — allegedly Eastern Parkway and Utica Ave. tops their "worst of" list, and had almost four times as many accidents at the Greenpoint trouble spot.
