Is your Christmas tree looking a little sad? Did that journey on the subway really do a number on the pine needles? Have you been forgetting to give your tree a gallon of water a day? Are you really regretting paying $250 for the Balsam-Fraser hybrid because the branches just aren't sturdy enough for your gazillion ornaments? Well, get ready for the most metal of Parks Department events: MULCHFEST!

Mulchfest 2020™ begins on Thursday, December 26th, and run through January 11th. According to the Parks Department, "With 67 total drop-off sites—32 are chipping sites—across the five boroughs, including parks and GreenThumb gardens, New Yorkers will be able drop off holiday trees which are then chipped and recycled. The mulch is used to nourish city trees and plants making make NYC even greener."

If you want some of the mulchy spoils, you can visit chipping sites on January 4 and January 11 and get a bag of mulch. And, if you don't have any to mulch but want to commune with Mother Earth a little more, you can sign up to help mulch tree beds around the community!

For those of you who aren't able to bring trees to Mulchfest 2020™ locations, the Department of Sanitation will start curbside pickup of Christmas on January 6: "Collection runs through Friday, January 17, weather permitting. Residents should remove all stands, tinsel, lights and ornaments before putting trees out for collection. After collection, clean, non-bagged Christmas trees will be chipped, mixed with leaves, and recycled into compost for the city’s parks, institutions and community gardens."

Fun fact: The DSNY collected more than 200,000 Christmas trees for "tree-cycling" after last Christmas.
