A former NYPD sergeant has pleaded guilty to a federal charge that he falsely claimed to be a top U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement official during an incident earlier this year.
Atickul Islam pleaded guilty to a charge of false impersonation of an officer or employee of the federal government, according to federal court records. He faces a sentencing hearing in the Eastern District of New York on March 24. His attorney, John Arlia, declined comment.
The charge stemmed from a March incident in which Islam contacted a victim and told them and their family to report to an ICE office in the city by April 15, according to a two-page indictment filed in November. The victim and their family were not identified in court documents.
NYPD spokesperson Brad Weekes previously told Gothamist that Islam had been suspended from the department without pay.
