Now that local hero Staten Island Chuck has predicted an early spring, will the weather cooperate? Not this weekend! A cold air mass arrived yesterday evening and that will keep the high temperature to just above freezing both today and tomorrow. With dew points in the single digits and plenty of subsiding air overhead we should have a brilliantly sunny Saturday.
The temperature will rebound on Sunday as the center of high pressure moves offshore and a storm passing way to our north pulls warmer air our way. The southerly wind should warm us to the lower 40s if not a bit warmer. Much the same is expected on Monday.
Warm weather will continue into the middle of next week but it is going to be accompanied by the 800-lb gorilla in the forecast. A short wave disturbance in the jet stream is expected to produce a strong storm over the Great Plains on Monday and push it through the Great Lakes region by Tuesday. Since that storm will pass to the north, the city is likely to see a fair bit of rain, perhaps with a bit of snow mixed in, starting late Monday night on through Wednesday. Temperatures will climb to near 50 on Wednesday before once again plunging down to the lower 30s toward the end of next week.
