The slow-moving winter storm that produced a wide swath of damaging freezing rain across the Great Plains and Midwest, as well as severe weather in Texas and Oklahoma, is moving eastward. Lucky for us in New York the conditions responsible for the bad weather, a wedge of cold air near the ground topped by warm, moist air moving northward from the Gulf of Mexico, are going their separate ways, with the cold air expected to stay well north of the city. We will, however, have to put up with a fair bit of rain tomorrow.
Ahead of that upcoming storm we are in for very pleasant weather this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The sun is out and the temperature should climb to the lower 40s. Clouds will appear early this evening as the storm draws near and rain could start as early as tomorrow morning, but is more likely in the afternoon. Here in the city the temperature will hold steady in the low to mid 40s on Tuesday. It will be cooler than that to our west, with all of New York from Sullivan County westward and much of northern Pennsylvania at risk of disruptive freezing rain.
The storm is expected to gradually move away on Wednesday. Once it does we should be in for several days of mild, uneventful weather. On average this is the coldest week of the year, but starting on Thursday it looks like we'll have a long stretch of days with highs in the upper 40s to near 50 rather than typical mid-January temperatures in the upper 30s.
