Are we tired of talking about the big storm yet? One thing that has been overlooked in all the foofaraw about not getting the predicted record snowfall is that this was still a fairly big storm for the city. Most observers reported at least eight inches of snow, with nearly a foot falling in the Bronx and more than a foot in eastern Queens. Snowfall measured 9.8 inches at the Central Park Zoo. To put that into perspective, since 1869 there have been 185 snowstorms with at least six inches of snow in Central Park. This storm tied for 65th place, almost in the top third of all warning criteria storms the city has seen.
While the snowfall prediction was wrong, the forecast for colder weather was spot on. This morning's low was 18 degrees and we are only going to warm to the mid 20s this afternoon. After a clear, cold, night tonight clouds will arrive tomorrow as a fast moving Alberta Clipper approaches. At most that storm could drop an inch of snow on us Thursday night, but it is definitely going to bring bone-chilling cold when the front passes on Friday afternoon. Don't let the warmish weather on Friday morning fool you. The temperature is likely to drop into the upper teens by early evening and the wind chill from the northwesterly breeze will make it feel much, much colder.
If you don't mind the cold the weekend is looking pretty good. Saturday will start out in the single digits but the day should be sunny and warm to the lower 20s. Sunday will be warmer, perhaps up to the freezing mark, but the clouds will roll in later in the day as the next storm system approaches. It is not yet clear if that storm, whose presence should be felt late Sunday into Monday, will be rain, snow or an ugly mix of the two.
