There should be nothing but blue skies today as a cold front passed through the city last night, replacing yesterday's cloudy weather with a bone dry atmosphere. How dry is it? Glad you asked! It's so dry that this morning's balloon launch from the National Weather Service office on Long Island recorded dew point temperatures that were literally off the chart, more than forty degrees below zero, about a mile above the ground. That sometimes happens way, way up in the atmosphere but is a pretty rare occurrence at that level.
The combination of extremely dry air, gusty northerly winds, and plenty of dead, dry vegetation has led the NWS to warn about the "enhanced risk of fire growth" for the city and immediate suburbs. Red flag warnings for the rapid spread of wildfires, are in effect for much of New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, the mid-Hudson Valley and northern Connecticut until this evening.
This afternoon's high will approach 70, but a second cold front passage tonight will keep Thursday's high to a mostly sunny 60 degrees. Despite a slight chance of rain on Friday the temperature should bounce back to the mid 60s and Saturday's high could reach the mid 70s.
