The summer doldrums are doldrumming along as we've got another sunny, warm afternoon ahead of us. Despite a cold front currently passing through the city we should see a high near 90 degrees. While the front won't cool us down any today, the humidity will drop considerably by late this afternoon.

Cooler air will make a brief visit tomorrow when the high will be in the 82-84 degree range. August looks to end on a warm note as the temperature is expected to bounce back up to near 90. That should be enough to make this the third warmest August on record. With no chance of rain until a cold front approaches late Wednesday night, this month will also have less than two inches of rain, which is not quite half the long-term average for August. What rain is expected late Wednesday into Thursday currently looks to be of the very scattered showers and thunderstorm variety.

Unlike today's cold front, there is a cool air mass behind the mid-week front. Labor Day weekend is expected to be on the slightly cool side. Highs Friday and Saturday will only reach the upper 70s, while Sunday and Monday will only be a degree or two warmer. Still, it should be mostly sunny for the entire weekend and well into next week.

Our local weather may be very quiet this week but the tropical storm activity over the Atlantic basin became much more active over the weekend. Gaston powered up to serious hurricane strength and, even though it is in the middle of the Atlantic, will produce several days of rough surf at local beaches. A tropical depression formed off the North Carolina coast and is expected to reach tropical storm strength by tomorrow morning. That storm will cause another round of rough surf later in the week. Finally, the disturbance we mentioned last week has been slowly dumping lots of rain over Cuba this weekend and is expected to reach tropical storm strength as it enters the Gulf of Mexico later today.
