An early season tropical storm is set to drench New York City on Friday, bringing heavy winds, flash floods, possible power outages, and — sure, why not — maybe "a few tornados" to much of the Eastern Seaboard.

After forming off the coast of North Carolina on Thursday, Tropical Storm Fay is currently headed north at 12 miles per hour. It's expected to make landfall somewhere in New Jersey between Friday afternoon and evening, likely weakening as it does.

National Hurricane Center

New York City is currently under a Tropical Storm Warning through 2 a.m. on Saturday. The National Hurricane Center is predicting 2 to 4 inches of rain — the worst of which will likely hit the five boroughs on Friday afternoon.

Meteorologists say to expect conditions similar to a Nor'easter. The NYC Emergency Management Department says to secure your trash cans, patio furniture, giant inflatable kids pools you just bought on CraigsList to survive quarantine, etc.

There is also potential for "a few tornadoes" today and tonight, per the National Weather Service, as well as scattered power outages.

Parts of the Jersey Shore and Delaware are already experiencing Fay-related flooding and surf conditions.

Fay is apparently the earliest tropical storm that begins with an "F" on record, and the sixth named Atlantic storm of the season — a milestone not typically reached until September 8th, according to the Weather Channel.

"Be ready for it," Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Friday morning. "Make adjustments to your plans." Unless your plans involved staying inside and waiting for all this to be over, in which case, go right ahead with that.
