Five people were killed in separate homicides across the city on Tuesday, representing a 19 percent spike from last year.

“We had a very difficult day. A lot of crime. We went back to look at 2014 to see if there were any other days like this and we did. July 6 of last year we had seven homicides,” Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said at a press conference yesterday.

In the Rockaways, a livery van driver identified as 38-year-old Leon Jason Brown was shot by the driver of another van, who pulled out a gun and shot Brown in the chest just after 8 p.m. He was taken to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, where he died the next morning.

Derek Quattlebaum, 28, was shot on Atlantic Avenue at the Van Wyck Expressway in Richmond Hill, Queens around 3 p.m. He was taken to Jamaica Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The gunman reportedly fled in a blue Audi.

In Brownsville, 24-year-old Robert McCall was shot on Herkimer Street near Buffalo Avenue just before 6 p.m. He was taken to Interfaith Medical Center, where he died.

On Staten Island, a 46-year-old unidentified man was found dead at the intersection of Sand Lane and Cedar Street with multiple gunshot wounds to the head and torso. Police say the suspect was in his 20s and wearing a black bubble jacket.

And in Manhattan, a 36-year-old man was fatally stabbed in the chest in Times Square. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he died about an hour after his arrival.
