A former FBI special agent hit a man in a Brooklyn crosswalk with his government car February, then dragged him unconscious onto a bench and left him there without calling for help, federal prosecutors alleged in an indictment unsealed Thursday.

Andrew Reyes, 30, of Brooklyn, was arrested Thursday morning and charged with violating the man’s civil rights as an FBI agent by moving him and driving off without getting him help. He also faces charges with lying to investigators about the crash, prosecutors said.

The crash happened around 6:20 a.m. on Feb. 3 at Ocean Parkway and Beverley Road in Kensington, according to the indictment. Prosecutors said Reyes was driving his FBI-issued Chevrolet Impala north in the southbound lane of Ocean Parkway, emergency lights on, when he went through a red light at Beverley Road.

The charges come nine months after the crash, and the court papers don’t say why Reyes’ emergency lights were on, how the victim is doing now or how investigators tied the crash to Reyes. Prosecutors have not identified the man, whom they described in a release as “severely injured.”

Reyes got out of his car after striking the man, dragged him from the street across the sidewalk and onto a bench, then went back for the man’s bag and set it next to him, according to the indictment. He then drove off with his emergency lights still on, prosecutors said. He did not call for medical help or report the crash to the FBI, according to the indictment.

On May 1, agents from the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General asked Reyes whether he had ever hit someone with his FBI car and not reported it, according to the indictment. He said he had not, prosecutors alleged.

“The defendant’s alleged conduct demonstrated a shocking disregard for human life and his sworn oath to uphold the law,” Joseph Nocella Jr., the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in a statement.

Reyes had been an FBI agent since about 2023 and was assigned to the bureau’s New York Field Office, according to court records. Prosecutors described him as a former agent but did not say when he left the FBI.

He was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday afternoon before a federal magistrate judge. His attorney declined to comment.

If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison, prosecutors said.
