It’s Tuesday afternoon in New York City, where a federal government shutdown is looming.
There’ll be significant implications for the city and the 52,000 New Yorkers who are federal employees if Congress doesn’t pass a short-term spending bill to keep the government open. One of Gov. Kathy Hochul’s biggest concerns in the event of a shutdown is a halt on new federal funds to deal with the migrant crisis.
Here’s what else is happening:
- A New Jersey school district is allowing officials to look through student’s cellphones after a 14-year-old student died by suicide last year following a bullying incident.
- Speaking of teens and cellphones, a new report shows teens get hundreds of notifications on their phone each day, with some getting as many as 5,000 in 24 hours.
- There were apparently 45 recorded earthquakes in New York since the start of 2022, but they were all small enough to go unnoticed.
- You don’t have to be the real Kanye West to get some celebrity perks. Just ask this Ye impersonator who was able to walk right into a star-studded Hollywood party.
- I never thought of toothpaste as a souvenir, but it seems to be the perfect gift (to yourself) that keeps on giving.
- Backed by a new Teamsters agreement, UPS plans to hire 100,000 temporary workers for the holiday season.
- Tomorrow marks the 25th anniversary of the first Harry Potter book's publication in the U.S. and New York City will be celebrating by illuminating the Empire State Building in Hogwarts house colors.
- And finally, teamwork at its best:
