New Yorkers are in for a chilly start to 2025.

Temperatures are set to drop starting New Year's Day, with a low of 33 degrees at night as a cold front moves in, according to the National Weather Service’s New York office.

Cooler conditions will remain through Thursday and Friday, getting progressively colder into the weekend, with highs in the low-to-mid-30s.

“It'll feel much cooler than what we've been used to over the last couple of weeks here and and really a little bit below what we normally feel for this time of the year,” National Weather Service meteorologist Dave Radell said.

Temperatures are expected to remain lower than average in January.

There are multiple cold fronts approaching, and “each successive cold front will bring in kind of a shot of even cooler air,” Joe Pollina, another NWS New York meteorologist, said.

He said the jet stream — the strong current of air that serves as a dividing line between warmer and more humid aid in the south from colder air in the north — will be dipping southward across the eastern United States in January. That means more cold air around here.

The chance of precipitation will be 33% to 40% above normal from Monday through Friday, Pollina said. That combined with the cooler temperatures could result in some snow.
