An 11-year-old boy was arrested and charged with arson today in connection with a fire which destroyed a house in Long Island yesterday. Detectives say that the boy, who was not named, used a Bic lighter to ignite plastic packing material in a garage in Hicksville, starting a big suburban fire which ultimately displaced 12 people.

The boy fled the scene as the flames from the packing material spread throughout the garage, and eventually engulfed the whole house on East John Street. It took more than 150 firefighters from five different fire departments to put it out yesterday afternoon. Police say the boy did not live in the home. He was charged with fourth-degree arson and released to his mother, and will appear in family court on June 17.
