Good Friday morning in New York City, where the mayor says he was a turnstile jumper in his day.
Here's what else is happening:
- Free eggs!
- "The constituents most opposed to all-day phone bans are the mothers and fathers who seem to be addicted to constant filial contact," the New York Times reports. (School boards, superintendents and building administrators are also getting in the way of Gov. Kathy Hochul's proposed bell-to-bell phone ban.)
- A Peekskill-based landscaping company whose owner is facing prison time for federal bribery charges is on the verge of getting $24.6 million in additional contracts with New York City to plant trees.
- In other tree-planting news, the Trump administration is canceling $75 million in federal funding for trees in neighborhoods in desperate need of shade, because of DEI.
- City Council candidates in 12 districts are running unopposed this year.
- Ridership has jumped on certain bus and train lines from New Jersey to Manhattan since the start of congestion pricing.
- Student scientists say Staten Island Chuck was right, spring weather did technically show up early.
- The Yankees will start the season without star pitcher Gerrit Cole but with tiramisu helmets.
- If you believe in free speech and exposure to opposing viewpoints, give the paper-straw apologists five minutes.
