A Bronx cyclist who was hit by the driver of a Rolls Royce late last month has died from injuries suffered in the crash, police said on Tuesday.
Jakir Hossain, 28, sustained fatal injuries while riding an electric bike on East 38th Street last Saturday night. The unidentified driver of a blue Rolls Royce convertible struck Hossain while traveling north on Tunnel Exit Street, according to police.
The driver remained at the scene and was not charged. An investigation by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad determined that the motorist had a green light when he struck Hossain.
A spokesperson for the NYPD said that conclusion was reached after speaking to "multiple witnesses."
Hossain is the 23rd cyclist killed this year — marking the second highest total since Mayor Bill de Blasio took office. Last year saw the highest cyclist death rate in two decades, with 29 people killed on bikes.
Total traffic fatalities on NYC streets are also poised to reach their highest level in six years, driven by an increase in speeding and drag racing, according to transportation officials.
The day after Hossain was struck by the Rolls Royce, a 22-year-old driver of a Dodge Charger emblazoned with Scream decals was caught on video speeding through a red light, crashing into an Uber, and sending a passenger to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The driver of that vehicle still hasn't been charged. The investigation is ongoing, according to a spokesperson for the Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. The victim's current condition is not presently known.
