At least three people were struck by drivers in Brooklyn and Queens last night, and two of the victims were fatally wounded.
The first incident occurred in East New York at around 7:20 p.m., when 50-year-old Shiela Rivera was struck by the driver of a 1998 Honda CRV as she crossed Pennsylvania Avenue at the intersection of Glenmore Street. Rivera, who lived a little more than 7 blocks away, was pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital. The driver of the vehicle who struck Rivera remained on the scene. An NYPD spokeswoman said that no charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.
About thirty minutes later, a man was struck and killed in Jamaica, Queens by a 2008 Honda CRV while crossing Jamaica Avenue near 180th Street on foot. Police say the unidentified man was crossing Jamaica Avenue "mid-block" when he was hit, and was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital. The NYPD spokeswoman indicated that the investigation was ongoing.
And according to a tipster, a car struck a delivery man on a motorcycle on Greenpoint Avenue near the Franklin Street intersection at around 8:20 p.m. "You could see the guy who was hit lying face down in the crosswalk…The driver jumped out and took off running north," the tipster writes, adding that it appeared the incident occurred during a test drive of the vehicle. The man in the passenger seat of the car—presumably its owner—gave chase.
"The victim was alive but I'm sure in terrible shape," the tipster adds. "I saw him lift his head at one point and heard his cries of pain when they put him on the stretcher. It was terrible."
An FDNY spokesman indicated that EMS transported the victim to Bellevue, but had no additional information on their condition. The witness indicated that several other bystanders chased the driver, and he was apparently caught. An NYPD spokeswoman said that the 94th Precinct had no record of a hit and run last night, or any other incident occurring near that intersection.
