Two tourists walking in Midtown were hit in a fatal hit-and-run crash this afternoon, police said, leaving one dead and the other injured.

According to the NYPD, the driver took off after the crash but was captured about an hour later, several blocks away.

The collision happened shortly before 3 p.m. near the intersection of 40th Street and 5th Avenue. A 50-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 55-year-old companion was taken to Bellevue Hospital and is in stable condition, police said.

The driver, who was alone in a minivan, fled the scene but was taken into custody at 38th Street and 8th Avenue. Police said the investigation is ongoing and urged the public to avoid the area.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
