Last week, a dentist with a practice in Chelsea was arrested for allegedly giving dental work to a drug dealer in exchange for meth, as well as possessing child pornography. Dr. John Wolf, 59, who was a prominent AIDS activist in the 1980s, was also accused of 'intentionally' attempting to spread H.I.V. and attending bestiality orgies in Brooklyn. Wolf's lawyer is now saying that his client may have been exaggerating some of his claims to informants—because of all the meth he was taking.
"I just don’t think any of that happened," attorney Marc Agnifilo said during a bail hearing yesterday. "People on meth aren’t necessarily accurate historians, and they tend to exaggerate and say outlandish things." Agnifilo instead called his client "a very good dentist with a drug problem," and argued that the information about spreading H.I.V. and the bestiality parties were "just in [the complaint] to prejudice...It’s not part of the charges, so it shouldn’t be in the complaint," he said.
Wolf is accused of providing "dental services to a drug dealer in exchange for methamphetamine." He allegedly used his dental office as a place to view and distribute child pornography and "provided [an] undercover FBI agent with a flash drive containing files depicting child pornography, including videos of children as young as toddlers being raped by adult men." The complaint against him also states that Wolf bragged about taking part in underground sex parties where people would have sex with animals, and told an informant he had punctured holes in condoms "in an intentional attempt to spread the H.I.V. to his sexual partners."
Wolf has been charged with conspiracy to possess methamphetamines with intent to distribute, and possession and distribution of child porn.
Agnifilo added that he had received "30 emails from dental patients saying he’s wonderful, and they don’t know where they’re going to get their teeth fixed."
