After saying that the team was moving forward without their star cornerback on the roster, the Jets came to an agreement with Darrelle Revis, who sat out Gang Green's training camp during his contract holdout. After midnight, Revis Tweeted, "I'm comin home baby!!! Revis Island LET'S GO," and "it not has only been hard on u guys but it has for me too. I just want to tell yall that I'm sorry for this process and I can't wait to get back on the field."
No kidding. As the Star-Ledger notes, Revis and the Jets had been negotiating for seven months. Revis made clear his desire to be the highest paid cornerback in the league (Nmadi Asomugha got a "staggering" $45.3 million three-year deal from the Oakland Raiders, with $28.5 million guaranteed). It's believed that Revis' new four year deal will be "$46 million deal, including $32 million in various guarantees." Per the NY Times, "He was slated to make $1 million this season, the fourth year in a six-year contract he signed as a rookie and by all accounts has outplayed."
Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum held an early morning conference call, "This is an intermediate step to what we hope will be an entire career of Darrelle as a Jet, for him to retire as a Jet and for him to hopefully go to the Hall of fame as a Jet," and even admitted to considering trades. But coach Rex Ryan and owner Woody Johnson headed to Florida to meet with Revis, his mother, and uncle this past weekend; Tannenbaum said, "We had countless meetings, countless meals, countless Roscoe Diners ... We just felt like it was not going to get done in the traditional dynamic. It happened real quick. It was a really important step to get Sean, Diana, Darrelle, Rex and Woody together. Again we talked all day (Sunday). Finally we were able to nudge it across the line. There's no question that without that step, I doubt we'd be sitting where we are right now."
It's unclear whether Revis will be playing in the Jets' season-opener next Monday.
