A cyclist was fatally struck by a school bus driver while biking along the east side of Central Park on Wednesday morning, police said.
According to an NYPD spokesperson, the 50-year-old cyclist was riding along 5th Avenue at East 96th Street at around 8:30 a.m. when he was hit by the school bus driver. He was rushed to Mt. Sinai hospital and pronounced dead shortly after.
There were 14 children aboard the school bus at the time of the crash, police said. None of them are believed to have been injured.
The bus driver was not arrested, and "there is no criminality suspected at this time," according to the police spokesperson. Additional details about the nature of the crash were not immediately available.
The crash appears to have taken place adjacent to one of four transverses that allow vehicles to cross through Central Park. There are currently no bike lanes on the east side of park.
The victim's name is being withheld pending family notification.
Today's death marks the 29th cyclist to die on New York City streets this year—the highest total since 2000.
We'll update this post as more information becomes available.
