A dump truck driver struck and killed a bicyclist on a busy stretch of West 34th Street in Midtown on Monday morning, then left the scene, according to the NYPD.

The bicyclist and truck driver were both travelling near Seventh Avenue when they collided around 10:51 a.m., police said. Bystanders called 911, but the bicyclist was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS workers.

Police said they later found the dump truck driver and questioned them, but did not make an arrest.

The NYPD has not released the identity of the deceased cyclist, but described her as a 50-year-old woman. Police at the scene on Monday inspected an orange JOCO rental bike, the type that’s commonly used by delivery workers.

Other delivery workers on JOCO bikes appeared briefly at the scene to catch a glimpse of the dead rider, whose body was cordoned off by police as a light rain fell.

The rider was the 36th person killed in a traffic crash in Manhattan this year, according to the advocacy group Transportation Alternatives. Ben Furnas, the group’s executive director, said that the city should be doing more to add safety infrastructure to city roadways.

“We’re horrified and heartbroken that another bike rider is dead,” Furnas wrote in a statement. “This is the 20th bike rider killed on our streets this year — the 20th New Yorker whose community is now grieving a sudden and preventable loss.”

The cyclist's death marks the latest in a string of fatal hit-and-run crashes over the summer. After the deaths, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced plans to crack down on reckless driving and add pedestrian-only zones in some parts of the city.
