A cyclist is in critical condition after hitting an MTA bus in Williamsburg last night.

Police say that the 46-year-old male cyclist was heading south on Driggs Avenue at around 8 p.m. when he collided with the back of the bus near South 5th Street. The man was transported to Bellevue Hospital and remains in critical condition.

An NYPD spokesman said there was no criminality suspected. The MTA confirmed the crash but could not provide any additional information.

This section of Driggs Avenue is part of the B62 bus route; there is also a bike lane on this stretch of Driggs, on the opposite side of the street from the bus stops.

[UPDATE] An MTA spokesperson gave us a statement that differs considerably from the NYPD's. According to the MTA, the collision occurred shortly before 9 p.m.

A male cyclist was riding his bicycle eastbound on South 5th Street when he struck the right rear doors of NYCT bus #4701 on the B62 route, which was travelling southbound on Driggs Avenue, and had the green light. The cyclist was removed to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition by EMS, with head injuries. No other injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.
