A Staten Island cyclist heading the wrong way was fatally struck by an ambulance on Monday night, according to the NYPD.
Police officials said the deadly crash happened around 10:30 p.m. as the ambulance was turning left onto Christopher Ln from Richmond Ave in Bulls Head, hitting a man on a bike who was going southbound in the northbound lane on Richmond Ave. Officials said the ambulance was just driving around the area — not transporting a patient or rushing to any particular location at the time. It was not operating with lights and sirens on, according to police.
The collision threw the cyclist onto the road, where he sustained severe injuries to his head and body, police said. The same EMS crew from inside the ambulance worked to render lifesaving aid, while a different crew arrived and brought the man to Richmond University Medical center where he was pronounced dead, according to officials.
Police said the 58-year-old man behind the wheel of the ambulance stayed at the scene and was not charged. Officials had still not publicly identified the cyclist early Tuesday morning, though police said he was a man in his 40s.
No criminality was suspected in the incident, according to the NYPD.
This is a developing story and may be updated.
