Police are looking for a man who allegedly assaulted a fellow straphanger after a religious dispute on a subway train last week.
According to the NYPD, the incident began just before 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 13th. The victim, a 40-year-old man, got into "a verbal dispute over different religions" with another passenger on a northbound N/R train at the Court Street station. A police spokesperson said that the suspect allegedly said that the victim's "preaching was disrespectful to his religion and his prophet, Muhammad."
The suspect allegedly punched the victim in the face when the train got to the 14th Street Union Square station, causing a contusion to the victim's right eye. The suspect then fled the scene. The NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force is currently investigating the incident. The suspect is described as 35-years-old, 6'0" tall with brown short brown hair, and was last seen wearing dark blue jeans and a green jacket.
Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime stoppers website or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577. All calls are strictly confidential.
