The police announced they arrested the driver who allegedly struck and killed a woman crossing a Manhattan street on New Year's Eve. The victim was a Brooklyn photographer who had been heading to St. John Divine to see the New Year's Eve concert.
Guler Ugur-Yaacobi, 44, crossed Amsterdam Avenue at West 113th Street when an SUV traveling north struck her at 6:10 p.m. on December 31. Her body flew 80 feet down the street. She was pronounced dead at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital.
The SUV continued going, but the NYPD found surveillance footage showing the fleeing car, a "dark colored Land Rover/Range Rover with damage to the right front passenger headlight and bumper."
Prezidor Porbeni, 28, a Bronx resident, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death, as well as driving with a suspended license. The Daily News reports that he surrendered and "admitted he fled because he saw police racing to the scene, cops said." He is being held on $20,000 bail.
Resident have complained that Amsterdam is like a "freeway."
