As has been the pattern for most of May a cut-off low is sitting above the East Coast today. Beneath that low is a budding coastal storm that will be just strong enough, and just close enough, to produce scattered showers and thunderstorms across the area starting this afternoon and lasting through tomorrow afternoon. The easterly breeze from that storm will keep the highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s range on Monday and Tuesday.
A much different weather picture will present itself starting on Wednesday. The cut-off upper level low will fade away. An upper level ridge will build in behind the departing low and that will allow much warmer air to arrive. Wednesday's high will be in the mid 80s. The Weather Channel says upper 80s but let's not go crazy just yet. Thursday will be more humid and not quite as warm but the high should still top out in the lower 80s.
Forecast confidence isn't all that great as we head into the Memorial Day weekend. While it is likely to stay warm, with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s from Friday through at least Monday, nobody seems to have a good handle on the precipitation situation. Scattered showers or thunderstorms are possible from Friday onward but it is way to early to get more specific than that as it looks like we'll have a warm front slowly sneaking into the area.
