Residents of New Jersey spent nearly $40,000 to send their Governor to Israel for some non-campaigning earlier this month. According to his office, Chris Christie's trip to the Middle East cost $39,871 to taxpayers. Those costs covered State Trooper protection for Christie, his family and 13 other delegates on the trip to Israel and Jordan that totally had nothing to do whatsoever with rumors of Christie running for President in 2016. Nothing at all.
According to Christie's office, the rest of the costs for the trip were covered by two private groups:
Choose NJ, an economic development entity founded by the Christie administration and funded by corporate donations, paid $36,246 for six government staffers to accompany Christie.
The Washington-based Republican Jewish Coalition shouldered costs for eight members of the Christie clan to fly privately and stay in Jerusalem’s most famous hotel, The King David. Executive Director Matt Brooks says the group is deferring to the governor’s office on releasing those costs.
Christie’s office didn’t release that data.
Unlike the Governor's ballooning helicopter bills, however, it is hard to find fault with Christie for wanting basic protection for his family and his custom yarmulke in the Middle East.
