After Cathie Black's tumultuous (and ongoing) appointment process for the job of Schools Chancellor and her gaffe-filled first few weeks you'd think the public might be willing to give her a break. But nope. A new NY1-Marist poll shows that there is about as much public love for Black as there reportedly is in her eyes. Just 17 percent of voters think Black is doing an excellent or a good job, down from 21 percent in January. At least there isn't much further down she can go!

And the bad news for Black doesn't stop there. The number of respondents who think she is doing a fair or poor job also increased to 63 percent, from 54 percent in January. And the phone survey of 772 New Yorkers found that another 23 percent of adults were not sure or had never even heard of her.

Interestingly, though New Yorkers don't like the Schools Chancellor, they don't hate the schools. Thirty-eight percent of city residents "say the schools in their community are excellent or good," and when New Yorkers with children in public schools were asked the same question "53 percent gave the schools a favorable rating."

Finally, though teachers have gotten much flack in the media of late (especially in the midst of the LIFO debate), New Yorkers at least remember when that wasn't the case. About 65 percent of city residents say teachers get less respect now than they did when they were in school. Only 7 percent say they get more respect.
