Earlier this morning, a cab driver standing in front of his double-parked cab was killed when a SUV crashed into the taxi in Manhattan.
Police say that Mir Hoosain, 35, was found unconscious on East 26th Street, between Lexington and Third Avenus, around 2 a.m. and was pronounced dead. They also found his cab rear-ended and a gray Nissan Pathfinder with extensive damage. Cops say that the Pathfinder, traveling east on East 26th, hit Hoosain's taxi cab, which then caused the cab to "lunge forward and strike" Hoosain.
Additionally, the impact of the crash also sent the cab into three parked vehicles and injured one of the car's drivers.
The Pathfinder's driver, a 42-year-old man, remained at the scene. The Post reports, "Investigators said that alcohol was not a factor but they’re still trying to determine whether the man driving the Pathfinder was speeding, sources said." WABC 7 says it's possible the driver hit the accelerator instead of braking, but one witness told WCBS 2, "Guy’s driving down the street so hard, going 80 miles an hour. Hits the car in front of him so hard the tires fly off the front of the car, I’ve never seen anything like it."
Another cab driver said, "Even if he was double-parked, you can’t just hit someone like that. I don’t know if you could get away with that, you just killed a person."
