A Department of Sanitation garbage truck struck and killed a woman Wednesday evening as she was crossing Bay Parkway in Brooklyn, according to the NYPD.

Siobhan Lynch, 30, of Brooklyn, was crossing the parkway at Cropsey Avenue around 6:35 p.m., 40 minutes after sunset, when the truck, heading east, turned right onto the parkway and hit her, police said.

Emergency services took Lynch to NYU Langone Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The truck’s 41-year-old driver stayed at the scene and has not been arrested, police said. The NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is investigating.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts are with the family of the victim,” Department of Sanitation spokesperson Joshua Goodman said in an email. “DSNY is assisting NYPD with their ongoing investigation.”

The crash comes just days before daylight saving time ends, meaning clocks will fall back and the sun will set an hour earlier.

The Mamdani administration is expected to launch its Dusk and Darkness campaign Thursday, a combination of education and traffic enforcement to help protect pedestrians and cyclists during fall and winter evenings. The city says traffic deaths rise to their highest levels during this time of year.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
