A senior prosecutor with the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office was killed while biking through South Williamsburg on Monday.
Sarah Pitts, 35, was riding east on Wythe Avenue near Williamsburg Street when she was fatally struck by a charter bus driver just after midnight, police said.
Pitts, a Crown Heights resident, joined the office of Brooklyn D.A. Eric Gonzalez in 2018, working in the appeals bureau and helping to review parole applications as part of the Post-Conviction Justice Bureau.
"She was a brilliant and compassionate lawyer dedicated to seeking justice," Gonzalez said.
"When the COVID crisis struck, Sarah selflessly volunteered to come into the office to help with urgent matters and to relieve the administration staff so they would not bear the full burden of the pandemic," Gonzalez added in a statement. "She was a kind and generous co-worker will be greatly missed."
The driver, an employee of Excellent Bus Service, remained at the scene and was not immediately charged. Gothamist's inquiries to the charter company were not returned.
Pitts's death marks the second cyclist death in less than a week. A cyclist in the Bronx and a cyclist in Queens were also hospitalized this weekend after being struck by hit-and-run drivers.
