A woman is dead and a baby girl is in stable condition after sustaining severe head trauma after police say both were pushed from a 15th floor Bronx balcony early Tuesday morning.

NYPD officials said someone called 911 from an apartment building on Olinville and Allerton avenues around 3:38 a.m. When officers arrived, they found a 23-year-old woman and her 8-month-old daughter outside with serious injuries, police said. Officials said the woman was holding her daughter when she was thrown, and she was pronounced dead at Jacobi Hospital.

Police have not released the woman's name, but neighbors told Gothamist it was Nathaly Ramirez, which a city official later confirmed, requesting anonymity ahead of a public announcement.

Nathaly Ramirez, 23, was killed after being pushed off a 15th floor balcony.

Margaret Attaway, who lives directly below the apartment where the incident happened, said she was watching TV and watching the dishes when she heard commotion. “All I heard was screaming… It was out by the back terrace over there.”

NYPD officials said they were looking for a ponytailed man in his 30s who was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt. Several residents said the man fit the description of the victim’s boyfriend, though police said they were still investigating exactly what their relationship was and have not publicly identified a suspect.

Neighbor Katrina Walker said she had interacted with Ramirez sometime last year, when she had put up flyers about losing her dog. When Walker drove the woman to the local precinct to file a report, she said Ramirez spoke about serious fights with her boyfriend.

“She mentioned [she and her boyfriend] would get into arguments and they would put the dog out on the balcony. I would hear barking from the balcony sometimes,” Walker said. “I thought it was just normal relationship drama, but obviously it was a lot more than that.”

“I saw her a few months ago with her daughter, and the baby was so sweet,” Walker said through tears on Tuesday morning. “I was talking to her in the elevator and I was like, playing with her daughter. So I was very upset to find out.”

As residents in the high-rise building tuned in to news channels Tuesday morning to learn more about what had happened, police said they were still looking into whether the couple had a documented history of domestic violence.

“The baby, I’m hoping and praying will survive, but probably without some disabilities,” Walker said. “I hope that she has family somewhere that’s able to fight for her.”

This is a developing story has been updated with additional information from the NYPD.

Due to incorrect information initially provided by city officials, this story has been updated to reflect the baby's age of 8 months.
