Police arrested a 21-year-old man on Monday morning in connection with the fatal shooting of a 71-year-old woman in the South Bronx last week.
Enriqueta Rivera was shot and killed by a stray bullet after two young men got in a fight and one fired “multiple shots” at the other on Thursday, police said. A second woman, 34, was shot in the left arm and will survive, according to the NYPD.
U.S. Marshals arrested the young man at 6:30 a.m. on Monday. He will be charged with murder and attempted murder, according to newly appointed NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.
The suspect lives two blocks away from the site where he killed Rivera, Kenny said.
The incident was the third shooting in Mott Haven in a three-day period. One left an 8-year-old boy injured, but he is expected to recover. An 80-year-old man was also shot and killed by a gunman riding a bicycle just days later, in a different Bronx neighborhood.
