A 31-year-old man from the Bronx attempted to shoot himself en route to the 52nd Precinct stationhouse on Monday, having recently agreed to surrender as the prime suspect in the shooting death of his 27-year-old wife. The suspect's sister intervened, and the gun shot wide.

According to the NYPD, officers responded to 2525 Morris Avenue in Fordham Heights around 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, where they found 27-year-old Jennifer Ortiz unconscious and unresponsive in the passenger seat of an SUV, with a gunshot wound to her head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Later that day, the NYPD named Amauri Perdomo, whom the News identified as Ortiz's husband, as a suspect in Ortiz's killing. According to CBS, Perdomo had seen Ortiz in the SUV with another man.

One witness told the news outlet that she had heard two men and one woman arguing before shots rang out on Sunday morning. "One was the husband because he was screaming to her, ‘You’re my wife, Why are you doing this?'” she said. According to the same witness, the woman was then heard yelling, “Kill me!”

The News reports that Perdomo agreed to turn himself in on Monday, at the urging of his brother, Angel Perdomo, who works as an auxiliary NYPD officer. Perdomo agreed to be driven to the 52nd Precinct headquarters by Angel and his sister, Alexandra, but pulled out a 9-mm glock near the corner of Webster Avenue and East 201st Street.

Perdomo reportedly attempted to shoot himself, but not before Alexandra managed to jump on her brother. One shot was fired, missing Perdomo and his siblings. Angel called the police, who took his brother into custody. Perdomo was charged with murder on Tuesday.
