A 60-year-old Atlanta Braves fan died last night at a Yankees-Braves game after falling from the upper level of Turner Field as he stood to boo Alex Rodriguez when he was announced as a pinch hitter. The man has been identified as Gregory Murrey of Alpharetta, an Atlanta suburb.
"When A-Rod came up, he got up really quick and put his hands over his mouth to yell something," Donnie Marley told the New York Times. "I don't know if he lost his balance, but he didn't slip. He just fell over."
Murrey tumbled from the top area behind home plate into a section where players' family members and friends were seated, hitting a wire on the way down. Former Brave Brian McCann's mother Sherry is a registered nurse and was among the fans and emergency medical responders who first treated Murrey, according to Deadspin.
"It was a sickening feeling," the younger McCann told the New York Post. "My mother was right in the mix. They were right there. It's sickening."
Officials did not stop the sold-out game as paramedics removed Murrey and workers cleaned blood from the stands. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, the Associated Press reported.
The death was the third falling fatality at the stadium since 2008.
