Gang violence broke out on Staten Island Wednesday night, sending two victims (and one assailant) to the hospital while terrifying a packed bus of witnesses. Around 8:30 p.m. seven suspects allegedly attacked two men, aged 20 and 22, with box cutters in the middle of an S74 bus which had just left the St. George Ferry Terminal. The gang is said to have been retaliating over a prior assault.

One passenger described the scene to the Advance like this: "They were stabbing the kids with box cutters...They sliced their necks, heads and all over their backs. Everyone on the bus was going crazy." When the bus driver stopped in the middle of the street to find out what in the world was going on, the group dropped their weapons and fled the scene.

Both of the victims (who reportedly have long rap sheets of their own) were taken to the Richmond University Medical Center to be treated for deep cuts on their backs, arms and faces. And that's where things got interesting. It seems that one of their alleged assailants, 17-year-old Jacquille Pender, also got cut up in the scuffle and decided he needed medical attention as well. When he arrived at the Richmond University Medical Center the police were already there questioning the victims.

When the NYPD was alerted to Pender's similar cuts he told them that they were from opening a can. But a quick check with his victims quickly identified him as one of their attackers. Yesterday Pender was charged with gang assault and weapons possession.
