Page Six claims

that Mayor Bloomberg is being wooed by President Obama to join his team at the White House: Building upon the mayor's golf outing with the Commander in Chief on Martha's Vineyard last Friday, "Now there are whispers that the president went even further and sounded out Bloomberg about whether he would join his foundering economic team as treasury secretary, replacing prime blame-target Timothy Geithner." Those billionaire credentials go a long way!

The source says, "Obama needs Bloomberg more than Bloomberg needs Obama... Obama's looking to do something bold and credible before the election.... It's been the focus of a lot of discussion...[Bloomberg] very well-liked and well-respected on Wall Street." The source also notes that it's better to have Bloomberg, who once considered running for president, in the fold than outside it as a potential 2012 candidate, "Bloomberg would absolutely devastate Obama in states like Florida and New York. Bloomberg couldn't win, but he could definitely elect a Republican president" by siphoning votes from Obama."

The Wall Street Journal (and, like Page Six/NY Post, owned by News Corp.) looks at this flurry of Bloomberg + White House official activity, too. The White House claims the President's golf game with Bloomberg is routine—"The president seeks out voices from outside the Beltway, holding discussions with the nation's mayors and governors and hearing from the American people directly at events and in their letters—but Vice President Biden visited with Bloomberg in NYC recently and Bloomberg also met with Geithner recently. Former Mayor Ed Koch told the WSJ that even though Obama may try to win Bloomberg over, "You can't neutralize Mike Bloomberg. You can't neutralize anybody who has $20 billion. He does what an 800-pound gorilla always does—he sits wherever he wants to sit."
