Mayor Bloomberg assured reporters yesterday that the number of stop-and-frisks conducted by the NYPD would decrease "significantly" this year, despite the department being on track to break last year's record of 601,055 stops (that's 1,900 a day). According to the Post, Bloomberg said this projection came from Commissioner Ray Kelly himself—but won't someone think of the McDonald's franchisees?
On Sunday the mayor addressed the congregation at The First Baptist Church of Brownsville—a neighborhood that ranked second in the top 10 places where stop-and-frisk is implemented—and acknowledged the growing frustration with the tactic.
One of the things we’ve talked about is whether they’ve had interactions with the police and whether they’ve been stopped, questioned, and frisked. Many of the young people have—and some said they understood why. At the same time, many of them said that their interactions with officers left them angry. Either because of disrespectful language or unnecessary force. I would be angry too. And so I understand why some people have called for stops to be eliminated entirely.
You've got to give it to him, the man is playing it pretty cool, especially considering that his own Schools Chancellor was stopped by police last year. Dennis Walcott noted at the same press conference at which Bloomberg announced the predicted drop that he believed that the police were just doing their job, but that perhaps they could have done it more respectfully. "What I didn't particularly care for were some of the types of discussions that took place between me and the police. And that was dealt with."
