Happy New Year! The de Blasio administration is going to get off to a rollicking weather start with a one-two punch of an Arctic front quickly followed by a coastal storm over the next couple of days. Those storms will bring very cold air, snow, winds and blizzard-like conditions to the city. Before those systems get here we should have a rather calm New Year's Day with a high in the lower 30s under mostly cloudy skies.

The first sign of trouble will be a few flurries this evening as an Arctic front pushes southward. The city itself should escape any significant accumulation of snow from this first blast but locations to the north and into New England could see a few inches. More importantly, the front's passage means that cold air will be in place for when the coastal storm approaches on Thursday night.

Temperatures should hold steady near 30 degrees tomorrow before the snow starts falling in the late afternoon. Once the snow starts falling the temperature will drop and the winds will pick up to 15-20 mph with higher gusts. We can expect 4-8 inches of snow, reduced visibility, and below zero wind chills Thursday night into Friday, leading the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Storm Watch.

Friday morning's low will be in the mid teens and the incoming Arctic air will keep the temperature there all day. With a northwest wind blowing at 20-25 mph, the wind chill will also stay below zero all day Friday and there will be considerable blowing and drifting of snow. Be careful if you'll be heading outside during the storm.
