A 31-year-old Staten Island woman has been charged with murder and sex abuse after a neighbor's 16-month-old son died in her care this weekend.

The NYPD says Gloria Fields of 195 Steuben Street was arrested yesterday and charged with murder, seven counts of assault, aggravated sex abuse, and acting in a manner injurious to a child following the death of baby Anthony Delgado on Sunday. Anthony's mother, Marta Delgado, had been allowing Fields to sit for her son for three or four months, according to Anthony's grandmother—she left Anthony in Fields's and her boyfriend's care on Friday, and received a text on Sunday that Anthony had fallen and bruised his face.

In fact, police say Fields beat Anthony and sexually abused him—when officials showed up at Fields's apartment building Sunday night after receiving a call that the toddler was in cardiac arrest, they noticed he had injuries consistent with abuse. Anthony died later that night, and the medical examiner's office says he died from “blunt force injuries to the head and torso." He had injuries to his head consistent with being hit, rectal bleeding, and a bite or burn on his penis.

The Daily News reported yesterday that Fields is schizophrenic and had a lengthy arrest record. Delgado reportedly left Anthony with Fields while she hunted for a new apartment. "It's disgusting. It's a tragedy,” a neighbor told the News. “People need to pay for this. She's a young mom. Instead of this woman helping her, she took away the only thing she had. That woman was a horrible friend.”
