This past weekend, the ASPCA, NYPD and New York Cares partnered together to help dogs who are living in the freezing cold by giving them (and their owners) free dog houses.
The police say that the frigid weather has led to an increase in reports about dogs left outside without shelter. The ASPCA says it further "learned from the NYPD that many pet owners lack the resources or knowledge to provide appropriate housing for their pets." Thus, "Operation Gimme Shelter" was launched in the Jamaica, Queens.
The ASPCA says it handed out 35 dog houses and 15 rain checks for dog houses. Besides the houses, dog owners received ID tags, a bag of free dog food, behavioral support for their dogs and other educational information. The ASPCA's Cruelty Intervention Advocacy program is also offering information on free and low-cost spay/neuter and vet services.
To report animal cruelty in any of the five boroughs, the public is encouraged to call 311 or submit an online complaint. For crimes in progress, individuals should call 911. Here are the ASPCA's tips for cold weather.
