All the ingredients are in place for a coastal storm to develop for the third consecutive weekend. A surface low pressure system is expected to move off the southeast coast today and run up the Atlantic coastline tomorrow. When that happened two weeks ago, the storm took just the right path to drop lots of snow across the region. Last weekend's storm passed too far out to sea, so we mostly just got a blast of cold air; the upcoming storm looks like it will pass too close to pull in cold air. There may be a brief period of snow late tonight, but that's likely to quickly switch over to rain. Before the storm hits we can expect a high close to 40 this afternoon under dull, mostly cloudy, skies. One note of caution: While the city and Long Island will see mostly rain, points north and west of the city may have to deal with a layer of freezing rain overnight.

This assumes the National Weather Service has correctly pegged when the precipitation will start. The NWS has the snow/rain beginning around midnight. However, the Weather Channel thinks the precipitation will hold off until sunrise tomorrow. If that's the case freezing rain shouldn't be a problem. Both forecasts have the best chance of rain occurring late tomorrow afternoon when the temperature should be in the lower 40s.

The rain is expected to peter out before noon on Sunday as the storm gets caught in the westerlies. Sunday's high should reach the mid 40s, which is about normal for late February. Monday should be a couple degrees warmer and with plenty of sunshine. The forecast beyond Monday looks unsettled right now.
