New York City's heat index may exceed 100 degrees, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory from 11 a.m. on Tuesday until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
The apparent temperature is expected to be between 95 and 102 on Tuesday, and in the 90s on Wednesday, according to the city—just in time for Wednesday's Parade of Heroes.
The stifling humidity also comes with a severe thunderstorm risk, beginning this afternoon, with a threat of damaging winds, according to the National Weather Service.
Con Edison says they're prepared for the "second round of hot weather," while warning that "increased demand for electricity to power air conditioners can cause cables to overheat and lead to outages."
The utility cautioned on Tuesday about the possibility of downed wires from the thunderstorms—partly thanks to Tropical Storm Elsa, which is expected to hit New Jersey's coast on Friday morning later this week.
To report downed wires, Con Ed recommends calling your local police department or 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). To report an outage, you can submit one at conEd.com/report outage or call 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). To find a NYC Cooling Center, go to the Cooling Center Finder.
For those wishing to beat the heat at the beaches, beware: there is a "high risk" of rip currents on Tuesday and Wednesday as well.
