The New York City area is due for a taste of summer this first week of June — and chances of rain showers heading into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service, a gradual warmup during the workweek will likely lead to temperatures approaching 90 degrees on Thursday.
“We can probably shed some layers, and air conditioning is probably going to be needed as we get to the middle of the week, especially in the city,” NWS meteorologist David Stark said.
Daytime temperatures on Monday are expected to remain in the low- to mid-70s before dipping into the upper 50s at night.
Skies might look slightly hazy at times into Tuesday due to smoke from Canadian wildfires, but it is well up in the atmosphere and not a health risk for those in the New York region, according to NWS and city officials. The smoke could make sunrises and sunsets more colorful than usual.
Conditions will stay dry and mostly sunny through Thursday, when daytime highs will reach the mid- to upper 80s, Stark said.
Then, the forecast calls for wetter weather just as the weekend begins.
Friday will be warm during the day, with highs around 86 degrees. That will be followed at night by a cold front bringing cooler temperatures and possible showers, including a potential thunderstorm.
Those conditions will persist through Saturday, Stark said.
“It’s not going to be a complete washout,” he added.
