Saturday’s sunshine and warm temperatures will give way overnight to a familiar sensation for New Yorkers: wet.
New York City is in for its eighth splashy weekend in a row — as the National Weather Service predicts rain will return overnight into Sunday and Monday.
Between a quarter to half an inch of rain is expected for the metropolitan area Sunday, as precipitation will carry residents into the new week before tapering off later in the day Monday. There are no flood risks anticipated for the region — just more potential disappointment.
The previous seven weekends in the New York area — including the Fridays leading up to them — have been dampened by nearly 13 inches of rainfall, according to NWS rain totals for those three-day periods.
“If I said to you — every day for the last five weeks, it rained on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, you’d be like, ‘Who cares?’” said Brian Ciemnecki, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. “But it’s the weekend where everybody has plans to go out and and do stuff.”
The heaviest weekend rains in recent weeks came during the three-day period beginning with Friday, Sept. 29, when heavy downpours and flooding brought the city to a grinding halt. The broader region received a total of 5.52 inches of rain that weekend, with almost all of it coming that Friday.
The persistent weekend rains have forced event postponements or cancellations throughout the wet streak, including previous interruptions to the Queens Night Market, a popular Saturday destination that is forging ahead with its regular outdoor plans tonight. Its organizers have publicly lamented the rains in the past.
“Again?! Six weekends of heavy rain in a row in NYC?!” Queens Night Market organizers wrote on X earlier this month.
Accompanying the rains returning early Sunday will be a downward swing in temperatures, Ciemnecki said. Warm temperatures on Saturday soaring to nearly 80 degrees will swing back down on Sunday, with high temperatures in the mid-50s.
The good news? Halloween is expected to be a seasonable 50 degrees with partial sunshine. But get your tricks and treats on the early side: There’s a chance of more rain Tuesday night after 8 p.m.
