Eric Adams has announced that he will participate in Thursday (June 10th) night's mayoral debate hosted by WCBS-TV, in a reversal of his statement earlier this week that he would be opting out of the event to attend a community vigil for a 10-year-old boy who was fatally shot in Far Rockaway.
In addition to Adams, the one-hour debate is set to feature four other leading candidates: Kathryn Garcia, Scott Stringer, Maya Wiley, and Andrew Yang.
Rivals had criticized Adams for electing to skip the debate, which comes just one day before early voting is set to begin on Saturday. One final debate is scheduled for next Wednesday. That debate is organized by the city's Campaign Finance Board and participation is required by candidates receiving public funds.
The one-hour debate starting at 7 p.m. can be expected to feature some fireworks. Adams, who has led several recent polls, has been facing intensifying scrutiny and will likely field attacks from his opponents. Following a Politico story, questions have emerged about where Adams lives, a controversy he sought to quell on Wednesday by inviting reporters to his basement apartment in Brooklyn. In addition to a residential row house in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Adams co-owns a condo in Fort Lee, New Jersey with his partner. How much time he has spent in his second residence has become a major campaign issue, with rivals accusing him of living across the Hudson.
On Thursday, Adams, who is Brooklyn borough president, also released EZPass records from his official city vehicle after Yang called on him to release them.
Here's how to watch the debate:
- Tune into CBS 2 New York or log onto the network's online platform.
- Listen to the debate on the radio stations WCBS Newsradio 880 and 1010 WINS.
- A Spanish-language broadcast will be shown on WLNY TV 10/55.
Gothamist will bring you a recap of the debate after it ends.
