An 81-year-old woman was viciously mugged in the stairwell of her apartment building in the Fordham section of the Bronx this week, and authorities believe the crime is connected to two other recent robberies in the area.
According to the NYPD, Benita Cuevas, 81, was attacked by a man in the stairwell of her building at East 188th Street and Webster Avenue at around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Cuevas told reporters that the suspect grabbed her from behind and snatched four gold chains—all "sentimental gifts," according to ABC 7—from her neck.
She was treated at St. Barnabas Hospital for a laceration sustained on her neck from the attack, and says she's afraid to leave her apartment. "She’s very independent, but now she fears going out and getting herself whatever she needs," her daughter, Lucy Reyes, told CBS News.
Police believe Tuesday's attack is connected to two other recent robberies. According to the NYPD, on August 28th at around 7:10 a.m., a 49-year-old woman says a man stole her cellphone after engaging in a brief struggle in the vicinity of 260 East 188th Street. And at around 3:45 p.m. on Monday, cops say a thief snatched a necklace and pendant off a 44-year-old woman at the corner of Webster Avenue and East 187th Street.
Cuevas described the suspect as a man in his 30s, who stands around six-feet tall and weights around 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing a gray and black striped hooded sweatshirt and jeans.
Anyone with information in regards these incidents is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577.
