Meteorologists on Wednesday warned residents in the New York City area to batten down the hatches — and secure loose furniture — ahead of high winds expected to blow through much of the region.
The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. for southern New York, Connecticut, and northern New Jersey, with gusts expected to hit 45 or 50 mph throughout the day.
“ The strongest winds are going to be expected in the afternoon,” said meteorologist Bryan Ramsey. “It could still be a little gusty overnight tonight, which will make it feel very cold … but probably not strong enough for that wind advisory to stay up.”
Temperatures are forecast to be considerably warmer than last week, in the mid to upper 40s, but Ramsey said the blustery winds would make it feel colder. The wind chill overnight could result in real-feel temperatures in the teens or 20s, he said.
Most of Wednesday was expected to be sunny, though the National Weather Service said there was a chance of isolated showers in the afternoon. More precipitation is forecast for Thursday and Friday.
“ It looks like it's mainly going to be a rain event, but we could see a little bit of changeover right as it exits,” Ramsey said, noting that temperatures in the 40s would likely keep snow from forming. About a half-inch to three-quarters of an inch in total are predicted.
The weekend should be much drier, Ramsey said, but temperatures will be colder again, with highs in the 30s.
